Three coats of diluted PVA glue applied (1:1) to seal the open-pored MDF. Sanded down with 500 grit after each coat leaving at least
a couple of hours between coats. The result is a glassy-like finish ready for priming.
The surface is primed with four coats of a high opacity oil based undercoat thinned down to the consistency of motor oil and applied
with a fine foam roller. Each coat is applied
24 hours apart wet sanding with 500 grit and soapy water between coats.
I decided to alter the visual design here slightly by bevelling all the edges (using the table saw). The internal joins
are reinforced with 18mm plywood strips.
